Emerald Communities Celebrates “Best of the PNW” Wins for Emerald Heights and Heron’s Key

At Emerald Communities, we believe the best recognition comes from the people who experience our communities every day. That’s why we are especially proud to share that both of our Life Plan communities—Emerald Heights in Redmond and Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor—have been recognized in the Seattle Times Best of the Pacific Northwest 2025 Awards.

These awards, voted on by readers across the region, shine a spotlight on organizations that deliver excellence, service, and community impact. To have both of our communities honored this year is a true reflection of the vibrant lifestyles, compassionate care, and strong resident-driven cultures that define Emerald Communities.

Emerald Heights gold award for Best of the PNW

Emerald Heights: Gold for Independent Living

Emerald Heights was named the Gold Winner for Best Independent Living Community. Since 1992, Emerald Heights has been a trusted choice for seniors seeking a welcoming neighborhood, a wide array of wellness and lifestyle programs, and the long-term peace of mind that comes with a Life Plan Community.

This award is a testament to the incredible residents, dedicated staff, and innovative programming that make Emerald Heights one of the most sought-after senior living communities in the greater Seattle area.

Heron’s Key: Bronze and Silver Honors

Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor also shined in this year’s awards, receiving Bronze for Best Independent Living and Silver for Best Assisted Living. Since opening in 2017, Heron’s Key has grown into a thriving, resident-led community that emphasizes lifelong learning, environmental stewardship, and connection.

These honors highlight the strength of Heron’s Key’s continuum of care—from independent living to assisted living and memory support—ensuring residents can live with confidence and purpose at every stage.

A Shared Legacy of Excellence

Together, these awards celebrate nearly 1,000 residents who call Emerald Heights and Heron’s Key home. From engaging resident committees and philanthropic initiatives like the Mission Fund and Benevolence Fund, to the countless social, cultural, and wellness opportunities, Emerald Communities continues to set the standard for Life Plan (Type A) senior living in the Pacific Northwest.

We are grateful to the Seattle Times readers, our staff, and—most importantly—our residents, who make this recognition possible. Your voices, energy, and commitment inspire us every day.

The First Baby Boomers Turn 80 This Year- What It Means To You?

As 2025 unfolds, the leading edge of the baby boomer generation—those born in 1945—are reaching the milestone age of 80. This demographic shift is poised to significantly impact the senior housing and care sectors, which are already grappling with challenges in meeting the burgeoning demand.

Escalating Demand for Senior Housing

The U.S. population aged 80 and older is projected to increase by more than four million by 2030. This surge is expected to intensify the need for senior housing, potentially leading to shortages and waitlists. Despite the pressing demand, construction of new senior housing units has not kept pace. Estimates indicate that over 560,000 new units will be required by 2030, yet only about 191,000 are anticipated to be built within this timeframe. Factors such as high interest rates and elevated construction costs have deterred new developments, prompting companies to focus on acquiring existing properties rather than building anew. WSJ

Affordability Concerns

Affordability remains a critical issue in the senior housing market. As of recent data, the average monthly rent stands at approximately $4,100 for independent living and $6,400 for assisted living nationwide, however these rates are significant higher in markets like the Greater Seattle area. While some seniors possess the financial means to afford these rates, many opt to age in place due to personal preferences or financial constraints.

Caregiver Shortages

The anticipated increase in the elderly population also raises concerns about the availability of caregivers. Projections suggest a national shortage of approximately 151,000 caregivers by 2030. This shortfall is attributed to factors such as smaller family sizes, higher divorce rates, and geographic relocations, which diminish the pool of potential family caregivers. Consequently, many baby boomers may find it challenging to secure the necessary support as they age. WSJ**

Financial Strain on Families

The financial burden of aging at home is becoming increasingly pronounced. The costs associated with in-home care have escalated, with 24-hour care reaching approximately $290,000 annually. Research shows that seniors need an average of 3 years of assisted living care, with 2 out of 10 needing 5 or more years of care. Many families, lacking sufficient retirement savings, are compelled to make significant sacrifices, such as delaying retirement or taking on additional employment, to afford necessary care and home modifications. This situation not only affects the elderly but also places considerable strain on their families, both financially and emotionally. WSJ***

The convergence of an aging baby boomer population, insufficient senior housing development, caregiver shortages, and escalating care costs presents a multifaceted challenge. Older adults are now in the position to plan for their future and avoid facing the crisis unprepared. Our Heron’s Key community is expanding, with a projected opening early 2028 of our Phase II. Reservations are available now.

Addressing these issues requires coordinated efforts from policymakers, the private sector, and communities to develop sustainable solutions that ensure aging individuals can access the care and housing they need.

The Next Chapter Begins

At Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor, our residents are living proof that life doesn’t slow down after retirement—it gets more exciting! Take Rick Bleiweiss, for example. Rick, his wife Deborah Morgan, and their adorable Havanese dog, Gracie, recently made Heron’s Key their home. Rick’s story is one of reinvention, creativity, and passion—a perfect example of the dynamic, fulfilling lifestyles our community fosters.

A Star-Studded Career in Music

Before trading the spotlight for the serene beauty of Gig Harbor, Rick had a legendary career in the music industry. As a performer, Grammy-nominated producer, and senior executive at iconic record labels, he collaborated with music legends like Clint Black, Donna Summer, The Village People, Yes, and U2. Rick also helped launch the careers of stars such as Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, and Melissa Etheridge.

But Rick didn’t stop there. He transitioned from music to the literary world, proving that it’s never too late to pursue new dreams.

Reinventing Life as an Award-Winning Author

Now in his 70s, Rick is an award-winning author and book publisher. His historical mystery series featuring Chief Inspector Pignon Scorbion has captured readers’ hearts worldwide. His debut novel, Pignon Scorbion & the Barbershop Detectives, became an Amazon bestseller in five categories and won multiple domestic and international awards.

Rick’s second book, Murder in Haxford, continued the series’ success, and he’s hard at work on the third installment. He also recently earned the 2024 Career Changers Award, recognizing his remarkable pivot from music executive to bestselling novelist at age 77.

“I was both surprised and honored to receive this award,” Rick shares. “To me, it’s a testament to staying active and involved, no matter your age. Heron’s Key has been instrumental in keeping me motivated and inspired. The vibrant community here, filled with talented and accomplished individuals, is an incredible source of energy.”

A Life Fueled by Passion and Perseverance

Rick’s mantra, “Go for it and make it happen,” reflects his lifelong determination. Whether writing song lyrics, publishing books, or producing records, Rick has always embraced challenges with enthusiasm.

His advice? “Don’t let age hold you back. If you have the energy, interest, and passion, keep chasing your dreams.”

At Heron’s Key, stories like Rick’s are the norm, not the exception. Our residents thrive in a community that encourages them to stay curious, creative, and connected.

Staying Engaged and Connected: Life at Emerald Heights

Have you ever wondered how residents in a senior living community stay active and engaged? At Emerald Heights, residents have access to a variety of activities designed to keep them moving, nurture their sense of purpose, and foster meaningful friendships. Here are just a few highlights of what life at Emerald Heights offers:

A World of Creative Pursuits

Residents can explore their artistic side by participating in creative arts classes, engaging in workshops, or joining groups such as a crossword puzzle club or Bible study. These opportunities provide an outlet for creativity and intellectual stimulation while bringing people together around shared interests.

Staying Active and Healthy

For those who enjoy physical activity, Emerald Heights offers a range of options, including Zumba classes, traditional dance events, and morning stretch and seated exercise sessions. These activities are designed to promote physical wellness and encourage residents to stay active at their own pace.

Entertainment and Social Events

Entertainment options abound with midweek matinee movies featuring both classic films and new releases. Residents can also enjoy live jazz performances, music trivia nights, and games such as Bingo and the ever-popular dominoes game, Mexican Train. These events bring the community together for fun and laughter. Check this blog from our Emerald Heights community.

Connecting with Nature

Emerald Heights organizes scenic drives to enjoy seasonal highlights, such as autumn leaves, and field trips to museums, parks, and botanical gardens. For those who prefer to stay closer to home, a mobile garden cart delivers flowers and vegetables right to residents’ doorsteps, allowing them to enjoy gardening without leaving their community.

Resident-Led Activities

Residents are encouraged to share ideas for new activities, fostering a sense of ownership and creativity within the community. One shining example of this is the thriving Reader’s Theatre program. Founded by a resident with a background in theatre, this group meets twice a month to read scripts and act out parts using only their voices. This approach eliminates the need for memorizing lines or creating elaborate stage decorations, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved. Performances are held once or twice a year, with a recent event drawing an audience of 80 attendees.

At Emerald Heights, every day brings new opportunities for connection, creativity, and joy. Whether through arts, fitness, entertainment, or nature, residents have countless ways to stay engaged and live life to the fullest.
