Our Purpose & Values
Emerald Communities was founded on a vision to bring high-quality, nonprofit senior living to the Pacific Northwest. That vision began in 1979 when Bellevue resident Whitney Corwin and community leaders formed the Eastside Retirement Association to create what would become Emerald Heights, a premier Life Plan Community in Redmond, Washington. Despite economic challenges of the 1980s, the group secured financing and opened Emerald Heights in 1992—offering a vibrant, wellness-focused lifestyle for older adults.
Building on this success, Emerald Communities expanded with Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor in 2017, continuing its tradition of nonprofit stewardship, innovative design, and mission-driven service. Today, Emerald Communities is a recognized leader in senior living in Washington State, developing communities where residents can age with confidence, purpose, and connection.
